Held every year on the 1st Tuesday of November, the Melbourne Cup appeals to some of the best race horses in the world, all vying to have an chance to get some of the $6 million prize money that's offered each year. Known as 'the race that stops a nation', the Melbourne Cup runs over a length of 3,200 metres and it is the richest and most esteemed 'two-mile' handicap in the world. It's also one of the richest turf races worldwide and it is the feature race within the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.Organised at Melbourne's famous Flemington Racecourse, that is under the operation of the Victorian Racing Club, this cup is a handicap race open to all horses aged three-years-old and over.
